Judge Not?

People often take scripture out of context and say, "only God can judge me." This is often said to defend their sin and shirk the responsibility of repentance and sanctification.


The reason Apostle Paul said he was judged only by God is because he was acting according to the Spirit and was walking in righteousness:

1 Corinthians 4:3-4 KJV - But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man's judgment: yea, I judge not mine own self. [4] For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.

Apostle Paul lived a Holy and sanctified life, and called the church to repentance. Apostle Paul was a spiritual (Holy Spirit filled) and can judge all things:

1 Corinthians 2:15 KJV - But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

Those who are still in sin are carnal and not walking in the Spirit, therefore, a Spiritual man can judge them:

Galatians 5:16-17 KJV - This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. [17] For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Apostle Paul said that we will judge the world and the angels, so we should judge the matters of those in the Body of Christ (Church):

1 Corinthians 6:2-8 KJV - Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? [3] Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life? [4] If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church. [5] I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren? [6] But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. [7] Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? [8] Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.

Paul said we should judge the actions of those that are within (Church), and not keep company with sinners:

1 Corinthians 5:11-13 KJV - But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. [12] For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? [13] But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

Another verse taken out of context is, "judge not least you be judged." Jesus gave us this command to prevent hypocrisy and the oppression of the Pharisees:

Matthew 7:1-5 KJV - Judge not, that ye be not judged. [2] For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. [3] And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? [4] Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? [5] Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

Jesus actually commanded us to judge righteously:

John 7:24 KJV - Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

Often times when I quote the Bible, people say I am being judgmental, but even Jesus said His spoken word will judge them and possibly condemn them to hell on the Day of Judgment if they don't repent:

John 12:48-50 KJV - He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. [49] For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. [50] And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.



Apostle Paul tells us the sinners will not be saved:

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 KJV - Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, [10] Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. [11] And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Let us be faithful and wise in our judgments and continue to share the word of God so that sinners will come to repentance and Holiness:

Titus 2:11-15 KJV - For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, [12] Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; [13] Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; [14] Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. [15] These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
