Grace Alone by Faith Alone?

The Book of John, known as the Gospel of John, gives the account of the Apostle John who walked with Jesus on the earth. John tells us that it is only through Jesus Christ that we may be saved:

  • John 14:6 KJV - Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

We also read, that without Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are condemned already, as He is the Passover Lamb of God who covers our sins:

  • John 3:16-18 KJV - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. [17] For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. [18] He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Being Born Again

Jesus told us specifically that we must be born again by water and of the Spirit:

  • John 3:3-6 KJV - Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. [4] Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? [5] Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. [6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

To initiate the born-again experience we first have believe in Jesus as God in the flesh who died for our sins and rose again, and we then confess and forsake our sins, being water baptized into Christ for the remission of sins, and put our faith and trust in Jesus alone and obey His commandments.

  • Acts 2:38 KJV - Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  • Ephesians 1:13-14 KJV - In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, [14] Which is the earnest (down-payment) of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

As followers of Christ, we are not under the Old Covenant of Moses as the nation of Israel, but we who believe in the Messiah recieve His Spirit, the Spirit of God, and He leads and transforms us according to His will and righteousness. We are then born again by His Spirit in us and our past sinful life is dead and gone:

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17-19 KJV - Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. [18] And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; [19] To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

This New Covenant born-again promise was brought to us by the Lord Jesus Christ who is the Mediator and Testator of the covenant by the shedding of His blood on the Cross (Isaiah 53). The New Covenant promise is recorded here where the writer of book of Hebrews seems to be quoting from the Book of Jeremiah Chapter 31:

  • Hebrews 8:7-13 KJV - For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. [8] For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: [9] Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. [10] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: [11] And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. [12] For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. [13] In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

When we put our faith in Jesus, turn away from our sins, are water baptized in Christ, and make a commitment to follow His commandments, we receive  forgiveness of sins, His Spirit and He gives us a new heart and writes His laws into our mind so that we may be born again.

Sanctification and Walking the Walk

Today many Christians have stained their garments, their wedding dress is battered and torn by the pollutions of the world, the decietfulness of riches, ear tickling sermons, failing to go deeper with Christ, allowing idolatry into their hearts, and quitting when tests and trials appear in the form of persecution and hardships. We are called to bear our cross for Him, Jesus who is God spared not His own life for our sakes. We must hang on His every word, and keep the commands of Jesus and faith in the Holy Bible no matter the cost.

Only five of the ten virgins in Matthew 25 were wise and had enough oil (Holy Spirit) to go out after the midnight cry (End Days) and meet the Bridegroom. Do not be left behind when the Bridegroom comes suddenly and without notice (1 Corinthians 15:52)!

Brothers and sisters, it's true we are saved by grace through faith and not of works lest any man boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). Jesus Christ, God the Creator in the flesh, lived a sinless life and paid for our sin-debt on the cross (Colossians 1:19-23) and rose from the dead three days later (Romans 10:9).

Yet, we are called to bring forth fruits worthy of repentance (Acts 26:20). We are called to be a new creature (2 Corin 5:17) by the water baptism which is the baptism of repentance (Mark 1:4) and by the new birth of the Holy Spirit (John 3:5). Our old sinful life was nailed to the cross with Christ (Colossians 2:13-14).

  • 1 John 3:7-9 KJV - Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. [8] He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. [9] Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

We are unable to earn the perfect righteousness needed to enter into Heaven without the blood of Jesus Christ covering our sins (Hebrews 9:15). It is true, we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23-24), but God forbid we continue in sin for grace to abound (Romans 6). The unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-12).

  • 2 Corinthians 7:1 KJV - Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Let us not sit on our talents (Matthew 25:25-30) but rather bring glory to God with our works where with the Spirit works in us.

  • Ephesians 2:10 KJV - For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

  • Titus 2:11-15 KJV - For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, [12] Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; [13] Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; [14] Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. [15] These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
  • James 2:19-24 KJV - Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. [20] But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? [21] Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? [22] Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? [23] And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. [24] Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

• By Their Fruit

Let us be sober and vigilant, not forgetting we are in a spiritual war for our souls:

  • Ephesians 6:11-18 KJV - Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. [12] For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places . [13] Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. [14] Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; [15] And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; [16] Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. [17] And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: [18] Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Brothers and sisters, do not be decieved by this easy grace, no-works-salvation gospel. Jesus addressed the seven churches according to THEIR WORKS in the Book of Revelations. Only one church will be found worthy to escape the Tribulation period (Daniel's 70th week) based on THEIR WORKS:

  • Revelation 3:7-13 KJV - And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; [8] I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. [9] Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. [10] Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. [11] Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. [12] Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. [13] He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

We are called to be separate from the world, walking in righteousness and truth according to the word of God:

  • Ephesians 5:27 KJV - That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
  • Romans 12:1-2 KJV - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. [2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
  • 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 KJV - Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? [15] And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? [16] And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them ; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. [17] Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing ; and I will receive you, [18] And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

We must not let anyone steal our crown, for we have not obtained the crown of life until we finish our course here on earth in Christ. Do not be deceived, we must overcome and remain steadfast and unmovable until the rapture or even death and then we will recieve our promised inheritance!

  • Revelation 2:7 KJV — He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
  • Revelation 2:11 KJV — He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
  • Revelation 2:17 KJV — He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
  • Revelation 2:26-27 KJV — And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
  • Revelation 3:5 KJV — He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
  • Revelation 3:12 KJV — Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
  • Revelation 3:21 KJV — To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
